NETHER HALL

On the right-hand side of Nether Hall Road, nestling behind the buildings, is NETHER HALL, an early Georgian house with rendered walls and a Westmoreland slate roof.

This was once the ancestral home of the Copley family, one of Doncaster's prominent families and who owned several stately homes.

The Hall stood in a thirty-acre park, extending from the banks of the River Don to Thorne Road, and from the lodge at Sunny Bar to a narrow winding lane leading from Thorne Road to Strawberry Island, and across to Wheatley Hall.

The park was bounded by a limestone wall, some remnants of which can still be seen. Fine elm trees flanked the southern boundary facing Christ Church. On the far side of Broxholme Lane was Broxholme Park, and beyond that was closes and fields, at that time only one or two villas stood in isolation on Thorne Road.

Losing its setting has severely affected the impact of this building.

From Nether Hall, turn left and continue down Nether Hall Road and head back to the town centre.

On reaching the crossing on Market Road, cross over to the other side of the road and approach Sunny Bar.

The pillars and decorative metalwork celebrates that Sunn or Sunny Bar was the easternmost bridge and gate that stood on the Bar Dyke, and was the entrance into the Market Place.
