The HALIFAX BUILDING SOCIETY was rebuilt in 1978, retaining the mid 18th century facade at first and second floor levels.

Notice the rounded corner building and on the floor, a depiction of the Butter Cross, which stood here prior to being demolished to make way for the Corn Market building in 1847.

The Corn Market replaced a number of buildings, including two Shamble buildings and the Town Hall. When the Town Hall was being demolished, they discovered the remains of the Mary Magdalene Church, which is said to have dated back to the 12th Century, the remains were not preserved.

Looking around at this point, we can see the Fish Market extension built on the Corn Market in the 1930s.
