LEESINGS NOW GREGGS BAKERS
Turn into Baxter Gate, and on your right, sandwiched between two modern developments, is a narrow Victorian building with an ornate gable and decorative stone and ironwork. Now THE BAKER'S OVEN, it was Leesing's, noted pork butchers, from 1894 until 1980, as the name and date above the first-floor windows indicate.
The owner of the business, David Leesing, was killed in a tragic accident in the shop.

Before the ring road was built, you could walk all the way down St George Gate to the Church.
