Scot Lane Right/Magdalens
In 1788 the Corporation purchased a house on the corner here. They set out their plans to demolish it and construct one with a rounded corner. Although it is not certain this might have been our first rounded corner. It was simple but well proportioned. The architect was William Lindley who undertook much other work for the Corporation as well as designing many other private properties. Sadly it was demolished in the 1920s as a result of a street widening scheme on the north side of Scot Lane. The substantial office block which occupied much of that side of the road by 1930 was called Winchester House. The new rounded corner which was constructed had a balcony, an unusual feature.
