Beethams
The first known corner building here was a coffee shop and then a wines and spirits shop. It was acquired by Beethams, who ran the George and Dragon next door, in about 1826 and the premises were redeveloped. Indeed it has been rebuilt several times. The first rounded corner was built in the 1890s due to the widening of the north side of Baxtergate. The name Beethams was prominently displayed. The family sold it to a brewery who demolished it and built the bland current building in 1964 , although it does at least have a rounded corner. . In 1986 the name Beetham was lost too when it became the Gatehouse. The Vintage Rock Bar now occupies part of the building.
