Angel & Royal
The present shops and offices which occupy the site are one of the few modern rounded corners in the town. They were constructed in around 1990. . The design, although not innovative, is quite thoughtful and attractive. Included in the new buildings is a pub, now called the Angel and Royal and named after an earlier inn of the same name which once stood on French Gate. The design incorporates a rounded tower which marks the entrance to a car park.
These buildings were all constructed on the site of a previous commercial corner. At the time of demolition they were shops but they had been constructed as houses in 1842. They were called King Charles Terrace. This is because before they were built there was a garden here. In the 17th century this had been the garden to a house on High St occupied by a Lady Carlingford. Charles the First stayed with her and planted a pear tree in the garden. It survived until 1841 when it was felled and the new houses named after the King.
