Cleveland Street/ Young Street

This handsome neo Georgian brick building is an early example of a purpose built Government office in the town. It always had shops beneath. . It was built in 1925 to designs by T H Johnson.  There used to be two panels either side of the door giving this information but only one, with the 1925 date, survives. Note the large fanlight, a prominent feature. It is regrettable that the original timber  sliding sashes were replaced with pvc in an inappropriate design a few years ago.
