WILLIAM ANELAY LTD.
For over 250 years the building firm that bears the Anelay name has been a well-respected contributor to quality buildings in Yorkshire and beyond. The foundations of the firm were laid in Doncaster when John Thompson (born 1714, died 1771) founded the business in 1747. Later the Anelay dynasty took over and the firm became a limited company in 1927. The firm no longer exists.
The Anelay fingerprints are all over Doncaster. Not only did they build the Cemetery Chapels, Lodge and Gateway at Hyde Park in 1855 but they have also contributed to many other important buildings in the town, including Christ Church, St George's Church, the Wool Market (1863), the ill-fated Infirmary in Wood Street, St Jude's Church in Hexthorpe (1894) and alterations to the Racecourse Grandstand (in 1804). It was Anelays who added the attic storey to the Mansion House in 1801.
